Chameleons essay trios of cinematic fantasy at Up Close recital on Sunday, April 27
March 27, 2025 – Boston, MA – Chameleon resumes its popular “Up Close” recital series with a program titled “A play of light and shadow” on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at 4 PM at Goethe-Institut, Boston. Clarinetist Kelli O’Connor, cellist Rafael Popper-Keizer, and pianist Vivian Chang-Freiheit will essay clarinet trios of cinematic fantasy including Beethoven’s Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 11 “Gassenhauer;” Alexander Zemlinsky’s d minor Clarinet Trio, Op. 3; Libby Larsen’s Trio Noir; and Brahms’ Trio in a minor for clarinet, cello, and piano, Op. 114. The New London Day called Ms. O’Connor “the star of the evening,” The New York Times praised Mr. Popper-Keizer as “imaginative and eloquent,” andThe Boston Musical Intelligencer noted that Ms. Chang-Freiheit was “soulful, passionate, playful, delicate, and her sense of ensemble brilliant.”
Chameleon Arts Ensemble presents “How it ends?” on April 5 and 6
March 6, 2025 – Boston, MA – Chameleon continues its 27th season with How it ends? on Saturday, April 5, 7:30 PM and Sunday, April 6, 4 PM at First Church in Boston. The program muses on “cycle of life” themes of birth, death, and transformation through Ravel’s Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano “Posthume;” Richard Rodney Bennett’s After Syrinx Ifor oboe and piano; Olivier Messiaen’s final work, Pièce pour piano et quatuor à cordes; Gabriel Fauré’s valedictory Piano Quintet No. 2 in c minor, Op. 115; and the world premiere of Laura Schwendinger’s Ghost Music for for soprano, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion.
February 13, 2025 – Boston, MA – Violinist Claire Bourg and pianist Mika Sasaki share a Chameleon Up Close recital titled “Fragments and Fantasies” on Sunday, March 16, 2024 at 4 PM at Goethe-Institut, Boston. The duo will take on Brahms’ Scherzo in c minor from “F-A-E” Sonata, WoO 2; Judith Weir’s Music for 247 Strings; Schubert’s dazzling C Major Fantasie, Op. 159, D. 934; and Schumann’s d minor sonata for violin & piano, Op. 121. The Arts Fuse praised Ms. Bourg for “radiant graces” and “sweeping harmonic beauties,” and commended Ms. Sasaki for exploring “every orchestral-like texture and stormy aside with boldness and graceful humor.”
Chameleon resumes 2024-2025 season with “Between Two Worlds” on February 22 and 23
January 23, 2025 – Boston, MA – Chameleon resumes its 27th season with Between Two Worlds on Saturday, February 22, 7:30 PM and Sunday, February 23, 4 PM at First Church in Boston. The program explores the bustling styles, innovation, and means of expression that blossomed between the two world wars. It includes Milhaud’s jazz-age Création du monde for piano quintet; Berg’s Adagio from Kammerkonzert for violin, clarinet; and piano; George Rochberg’s Between Two Worlds (Ukiyo-e III) for flute and piano; and two rarities: Pavel Haas’ folk-tinged Wind Quintet (1929) and Erich Korngold’s late-romantic masterpiece, the Suite for two violins, cello, and piano left-hand, Op. 23.
Chameleon Arts Ensemble presents “Origin Stories” on November 23 and 24
October 24, 2024 – Boston, MA – Chameleon continues its 27th season with Origin Stories on Saturday, November 23, 7:30 PM and Sunday, November 24, 4 PM at First Church in Boston. Inspired by the origin stories of comic book superheroes, this virtuosic program includes early works by musical superheroes: Beethoven’s Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Major, WoO 36; Bernstein’s Sonata for clarinet and piano; Chinary Ung’s Child Song for flute, violin, cello, and piano; and George Enescu’s kaleidoscopic Octet in C Major, Op. 7.
Chameleon opens 27th season with “Exercises en Route” on October 5-6
September 5, 2024 – Boston, MA – Chameleon opens its 27th season with Exercises en Route on Saturday, October 5, 7:30 PM and Sunday, October 6, 4 PM at First Church in Boston. The program of poetry, legacy, and memory includes Schubert’s Cello Quintet; Ernest Bloch’s Three Nocturnes for piano trio; Arnold Schoenberg’s 1905 Ein Stelldichein (A Rendezvous) for oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano; and Earl Kim’s Samuel Beckett-inspired cycle, Exercises en Route for soprano, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, and percussion.
