Program

  • Olivier Messiaen, Theme et variations for violin & piano
  • Charles Martin Loeffler, Deux Rhapsodies for oboe, viola & piano
  • Steven Stucky, Sappho Fragments for soprano, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano & percussion
  • Franz Liszt, Romance oubliée for cello & piano, S. 132
  • Cesar Franck, Piano Quintet in f minor, Op. 14

Love, passion, and opulence frame our 24th season finale. Messiaen creates a poignant wedding gift for his bride, and Loeffler conjures fantastical scenes of love and death. Franck’s mighty piano quintet is an extravagant picture of turbulent infatuation, and Steven Stucky weaves together scenes of intimacy and longing from the dazzling Poetess of antiquity. Truly, madly, deeply.

"[They] ranged brilliantly over a huge spectrum…this memorable performance was evocative, cathartic, and simply ravishing. "
