Program

  • Robert Schumann, Violin Sonata No. 1 in a minor, Op. 105
  • Sebastian Currier, Verge for clarinet, violin & piano
  • Carl Reinecke, Fantasiestücke for clarinet & piano, Op. 22
  • Helena Tulve, Saar (Island) for clarinet & violin
  • Béla Bartók, Contrasts for violin, clarinet & piano, Sz. 111, BB 116

There are few composers as colorful, provocative, and personal as Bartók. He found his voice in folk music and exploited the possibilities of the clarinet and violin to the hilt, with barbaric energy, quixotic shifts, and wondrous, breathless calms. Currier, too, stands at the edge of excess with quirky, ever-changing moods. Schumann, as always, rides the waves of emotion from the most delicate utterings to extravagant outpourings of passion and verve.

"The performance was superb... producing a sound that was both luxurious and clear. I can’t imagine a better case being made for this hybrid work. "
