Bartók holds a special place in the violin repertoire for ushering the virtuoso traditions of the 19th century into the modern age, fusing extreme chromaticism, Debussian harmonies, and Hungarian folk music. Beethoven, too, defied all expectations of genteel chamber music with his epic, fiery masterpiece.
